The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has commenced discussions with the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Lagos on a strategic partnership aimed at deploying advanced technology to improve traffic management and control across Lagos State.

The initiative was disclosed when the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, led senior management officials of the agency on a high-level working visit to the Chinese Consulate, where they met with the Consul General, Her Excellency Yan Yuqing.

The meeting focused on strengthening institutional collaboration and exploring opportunities for technology transfer, professional development and the adoption of innovative solutions to address the increasingly complex mobility challenges confronting Lagos as a rapidly expanding megacity.

Bakare-Oki said the growing vehicular population, expanding commercial activities and rising transportation demands in Lagos had made it imperative for the state to embrace sophisticated, technology-driven traffic management systems.

According to him, the agency is committed to continually upgrading its operational framework through the deployment of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), real-time traffic monitoring, smart surveillance, artificial intelligence, data-driven enforcement and automated incident detection technologies.

He noted that collaboration with Chinese authorities and relevant stakeholders could provide LASTMA with access to international expertise, technological knowledge and innovative solutions that could be adapted to the peculiarities of Lagos' transportation ecosystem.

The LASTMA General Manager also emphasised the importance of human capacity development, saying technological advancement must be supported by sustained professional training and knowledge transfer.

He explained that personnel must acquire the necessary technical competencies to effectively deploy, operate and manage emerging traffic management technologies.

Responding, Yan Yuqing welcomed the LASTMA delegation and expressed support for deeper institutional and professional exchanges between relevant authorities and stakeholders in Lagos State and their counterparts in China.
