Ikeja Electric Warns Customers Against Unauthorised Electricians, Gives MAP Refund Update

Ikeja Electric Plc has warned customers against engaging unauthorised electricians to work on its poles, power lines and electrical installations, following recent fatalities linked to unsafe electrical activities on its network.

The electricity distribution company issued the warning during its September Virtual Stakeholder Engagement, a monthly forum organised to educate customers, provide operational updates and address issues affecting electricity service delivery.

Speaking during the engagement, the company’s Head of Quality, Health, Safety and Environment, Olaniyi Olayiwola, urged customers to avoid allowing unqualified or unauthorised persons to climb Ikeja Electric poles, work on power lines, tamper with electrical installations or engage in illegal connections.

Olayiwola disclosed that some recent incidents involving unauthorised electrical activities had resulted in fatalities.

“Please do not engage electricians to climb Ikeja Electric poles. If you see someone carrying out unsafe activities around our infrastructure, kindly report to us,” he said.

He advised customers and members of the public not to confront or intervene directly when they encounter unsafe electrical activities, but to report such incidents through the company’s designated safety emergency channels.

The official also called on residents and communities to maintain adequate clearance around high-voltage power lines, stressing that encroachment on electricity infrastructure and inadequate right-of-way continue to pose significant safety risks.

Ikeja Electric Explains MAP Refund Process

The stakeholder engagement also featured updates on Ikeja Electric’s metering programme, including new meter prices and the ongoing Meter Asset Provider (MAP) refund process.

The company explained that eligible customers who had previously paid for their meters would receive refunds through credits applied to their electricity vending transactions over the approved refund period.

According to the company, customers can monitor the status of their MAP refunds online using their meter number or account number.

The refund dashboard provides information such as the cost of the meter, refund count, monthly refund amount, total refund received and the date of the last refund.

It also provides details of the applicable refund token, which is sent to the customer’s registered phone number or email address.

Customers who have concerns about their MAP refunds were advised to contact Ikeja Electric through its official complaint channels or visit the nearest undertaking office for assistance.

Company Urges Customers to Use Official Channels

Speaking on the importance of customer engagement, Ikeja Electric’s Head of Corporate Communications, Kingsley Okotie, urged customers to rely on the company’s official communication and complaint channels for accurate information and prompt resolution of concerns.

“Our engagement with customers goes beyond providing information. It is about ensuring that our customers have the knowledge and channels they need to stay safe, seek assistance and get their concerns properly addressed,” Okotie said.

The company said the September engagement underscored its commitment to customer safety, transparency and continuous education, while strengthening collaboration with customers and communities across its network.

Customers can contact Ikeja Electric through its customer care lines 0201-7000-250 and 0201-227-2940, its official website, email address customercare@ikejaelectric.com, and its verified social media platforms.
