From Hardship to Leadership: Baale Ajibose Daniel Reveals Struggles Behind ‘Forge in Silence’
By Fanayajo Ranti Margaret
The story of traditional leadership is often told through titles, ceremonies and public recognition, but for Baale Ajibose Daniel of Olota, the journey to becoming a community leader was marked by hardship, interrupted education, family pressures, legal battles, violence and unexpected acts of kindness.
Ahead of the launch of his book, Forge in Silence, Daniel has opened up about the experiences that shaped his outlook on leadership, perseverance and service.
Speaking in an interview ahead of the book launch, the traditional ruler said occupying a chieftaincy position does not necessarily translate into financial comfort, contrary to the perception held by some members of the public.
“Being a chief is a lot of challenge,” he said, explaining that the responsibilities and pressures associated with traditional leadership are often not visible to outsiders.
‘I Am Still Working’
Daniel said one of the common misconceptions about traditional rulers is that they automatically enjoy substantial financial benefits because of their positions.
According to him, he remains professionally active because he has responsibilities to himself and his family.
“I am still working,” he said. “I have to sustain myself and feed my family.”
He disclosed that, alongside his traditional responsibilities, he engages in consultancy and activities connected with the transport sector.
His experiences, he said, have also taught him to exercise caution in dealing with people and making decisions, noting that not everyone who approaches a traditional ruler necessarily has genuine intentions.
Education Interrupted by Hardship
Long before ascending the traditional leadership ladder, Daniel said he had to battle financial difficulties that repeatedly disrupted his education.
He recalled periods when he had to leave school temporarily and work as a labourer to raise money for his education.
While some of his classmates progressed academically, he sometimes had to start over after returning to school.
Although the experience was painful, Daniel said it eventually strengthened his resolve and shaped his philosophy that perseverance can turn difficult circumstances into sources of strength.
He said those experiences became part of the inspiration behind Forge in Silence, which documents aspects of his personal journey while offering lessons on endurance and determination.
How a Stranger Changed His Life
One of the experiences that left a lasting impression on Daniel occurred during his postgraduate studies in Owerri.
According to him, after completing an examination, he went to a motor park to return to Lagos but discovered that he could no longer find the money he had kept for transportation.
With no money to return home, Daniel said he became overwhelmed and began crying at the motor park.
A stranger noticed his distress, approached him and asked what had happened.
After listening to his story, the man reportedly returned with food and, more importantly, a transportation ticket for Daniel to travel back to Lagos.
Daniel said the stranger left shortly after helping him, and he was never able to locate him again.
The encounter, he said, had a profound impact on him and inspired a personal commitment to assist young people facing similar difficulties.
Supporting Students
Years later, Daniel said he has sought to honour that experience by supporting students in need.
He disclosed that he has sponsored examinations and other educational needs for young people, including payment of Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination fees.
According to him, he sponsored 50 candidates in the previous year.
For the traditional ruler, the initiative represents more than financial assistance. He described it as a way of passing forward the kindness he received from a stranger during one of the most difficult periods of his life.
Machete Attack
Daniel's journey into traditional leadership, however, was not without serious conflict.
He recalled facing legal disputes and other challenges after assuming the position of Baale, including encounters that took him before various institutions and courts.
He also recounted what he described as a traumatic attack during the COVID-19 period.
According to him, while he was outside his residence, a group of young people approached him. He initially believed they were coming to greet him.
Instead, he said, they attacked him with machetes.
Daniel said people nearby attempted to intervene, with some of those who came to his aid also coming under attack.
He survived the incident but said the experience profoundly affected his understanding of leadership, relationships and the challenges that can accompany public service.
He further alleged that a family member was among those connected to the incident.
‘Determination and Concentration’
Daniel said Forge in Silence is not merely an account of his personal experiences but a reflection on surviving adversity without abandoning one's aspirations.
He said the book is built around the values of tolerance, endurance, determination, faith and commitment to one's goals.
He summarised one of the central lessons of his experience in a personal philosophy:
“Your personal determination and total concentration on your goal will make you a promising candidate for your success.”
He urged people facing financial difficulties, educational setbacks, family challenges or other forms of adversity not to assume that their circumstances will remain permanent.
Rather, he encouraged them to remain focused, patient and determined while working towards their goals.
‘A Book Born From Silence’
Daniel explained that the title Forge in Silence reflects the process through which some of his most difficult experiences were endured privately before eventually being transformed into lessons for others.
Through the book, he hopes readers will see the person behind the traditional title and appreciate the sacrifices and struggles that can accompany leadership.
He also hopes his story will inspire young people facing educational, financial and personal challenges to remain committed to their aspirations.
Launch to Feature Dignitaries, Students
The forthcoming book launch is expected to attract traditional rulers, community leaders, professionals and other dignitaries.
A lawyer is expected to review the book, while Daniel will share additional experiences that could not be fully captured in the publication.
The event is also expected to feature musical performances by secondary school students and other activities.
For Daniel, however, the significance of the occasion goes beyond the formal unveiling of a book.
It represents an opportunity to transform years of private struggles into public lessons about perseverance, leadership and service.
From a postgraduate student who once found himself stranded at a motor park in Owerri after losing the money meant for his journey home, to a traditional ruler now supporting students and sharing lessons from his experiences, Daniel's story reflects a journey shaped by adversity, survival and a commitment to helping others.
Forge in Silence, in that sense, offers a glimpse into the struggles that can exist behind public titles and achievements—and how endurance can transform those experiences into a source of strength and service to others.
